Holes is one of those movies that hits different, even decades later. I mean, whose idea was it to make a kids’ movie about child labor, curses, and lizard venom? Disney was really on one.
Shia LaBeouf plays Stanley Yelnats, a kid who got sent to Camp Green Lake for catching a pair of sneakers. And this camp? False advertising at its finest. It’s just a dusty wasteland where they make you dig holes every day. Character building? Nah, they were running a bootleg chain gang. America, explain.
Let’s talk about Zero—quiet, mysterious, and lowkey the smartest one there. When he finally snapped and hit that “I’m outta here” move, we felt that. Zero was the hero we didn’t know we needed. And then he came back and started digging Stanley’s holes? That’s a real one.
But the wildest moment? It’s gotta be the flashback with Sigourney Weaver’s character as a kid. Her grandpa really had her digging holes in the scorching desert sun. And when she finally got tired and tried to complain, he hit her with that “TOO DAMN BAD!” Yo, we were speechless. No sympathy, no break—just straight-up savagery. That man was different.
And The homies really call him Banley Belnats tho. How did nobody figure out that his name was just backwards? Y’all didn’t have one teacher who could’ve cracked that code? And they really had this boy digging up his great-granddaddy’s beef from 100 years ago. Generational curses ain’t no joke.
Holes is a fever dream that somehow makes sense. The cast is wild, the plot is wild, and the whole movie is just wild. But it’s iconic. Just remember: If you ever find yourself digging holes in the desert, make sure you’re not cursed… and watch out for bitter old men yelling “TOO DAMN BAD!”
